Joy in a Jell-O Mold: How to Be Happy When You Can’t Just Leave
Y’all ever been to one of those old-school church potlucks where Sister Marlene shows up with the same lime green Jell-O salad she’s been making since 1973? The one with shredded carrots and mini marshmallows floating in it like life preservers?
And every year, she brings it in the same Tupperware mold—the one shaped like a wreath. That lid is so warped from decades of hot dishwater and judgment that it takes two women and a prayer chain to get it off.
Now here’s the kicker: nobody even likes the Jell-O. But we all take a scoop and pretend we do—because Sister Marlene is watching, and we were raised right.
I used to joke that some of us are living our whole dang lives in that Jell-O mold. Stuck in the shape we were poured into a long time ago. Maybe it was the job. The marriage. The house. The town. The role we play. The expectations. We didn’t choose the mold—we just showed up and tried not to jiggle too much.
And then, bless it, someone comes along and says, “Well if you don’t like it, just leave.”
Oh. Just leave. Well sure. I’ll just slip out the side door like it’s an open mic night at Applebee’s.
But some of us can’t.
Not today.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
Some of us are caring for people who can’t care for themselves. Some of us are carrying debt, illness, shame, responsibility, fear. Some of us are staying in places that are sucking the soul right out of us because the alternative feels worse. And some of us just don’t know who we’d be without the mold we’ve been sitting in for so long.
So what then?
Then we decorate the dang Jell-O.
We throw some whipped cream on top.
Add a maraschino cherry.
Cut it into fancy shapes with cookie cutters.
Serve it on the good china.
Make it sparkle.
Because even if you can’t change your circumstances right now…
you still deserve joy.
You still deserve to laugh, to feel beautiful, to taste happiness—even here.
You are worthy of light—no matter how dark it feels.
We stop waiting for escape and start looking for enchantment.
We find moments in the middle of the mess.
We learn how to laugh again. How to look for color in beige places. How to sing in a room that forgot music. We hang Christmas lights in July and wear sequins to the grocery store just to remember what joy feels like.
You don’t have to leave to live.
You don’t have to run to be free.
You can start by reclaiming one inch of joy. Just one.
Maybe joy doesn’t always look like freedom.
Maybe sometimes it looks like a spoonful of something ridiculous, served with a side of sass and a whole lot of grit.
So to all my friends sitting in a mold they didn’t choose:
Hang on. Add whipped cream. And don’t you dare forget—Jell-O jiggles, but it doesn’t break.
And when the day comes—when you finally stand up, shake loose, and say “I’m done with this mold”…
we’ll be right here, holding the door open and saving you a seat at the table.
You’re not alone. You never were.
